Definition of Fabric Pilling
Pilling is refers to the small ball of hair raised on the surface of the fabric because of the intertwining of short fibers or broken fibers.
Because water-repellent fibers are easy to adsorb together, and not easy to fall off from the surface of the fabric, water-repellent fibers are more prone to pilling than hydrophilic fibers. 100% cotton fabrics rarely produce hairballs, but polyester and cotton blends are prone to pilling after a period of wear.
When fabrics encounter hard objects in the process of use, the fibers or yarns in them will be hooked out, this phenomenon is called hook wire.
In the process of wearing and washing, the fabric is constantly rubbed, and the phenomenon of the fiber end of the yarn surface showing the fabric surface is called fuelling;
When the fuzz fibers do not fall off in time for later wear, they will intertwine with each other and be kneaded into a number of small spherical particles, called pilling.
Knitted fabrics due to the relatively loose structure, hook, fuzz, pilling phenomenon is more likely to occur than woven fabrics.

Pilling test: The fabric is rubbed with various friction methods for a certain number of times to make it pilling and pilling, there have different testing method ; such as pilling box method, Fabric Martindale Abrasion And Pilling Tester, Orbiter Pilling Tester Meter. Random Tumble Pilling Tester; Surface Fuzzing And Pilling Tester etc
1. Fabric Martindale Abrasion And Pilling Test :It is widely used to assess the abrasion resistance of woven worsted wool fabrics. It is designed to give a controlled amount of multi-directional abrasion, between the fabric surface and a crossbred wool abrading fabric, at comparatively low pressure until thread breakdown, or unacceptable change in color or appearance occurs. It is not applicable to fabrics having a long pile or surface coating.
Principle: Under the specified pressure, the circular sample with Lissajous circular track and the same fabric or wool fabric abrasive fabric friction. The specimen can rotate freely about the central axis perpendicular to the specimen plane. After the specified friction stage, the fuilling and/or pilling grade of the sample is assessed by visual description
2. Surface Fuzzing And Pilling Test: It is used to determine the surface fuzzes and pilling properties of both woven and knitted materials.
Principle: The sample mounted on the polyurethane tube is arbitrarily turned over in the wooden box lined with cork with constant speed. After a specified number of flips, the performance of pilling and/or pilling is visually described and evaluated.
3. Orbiter Pilling Tester Test : is used to determine the surface fuzzes and pilling properties of both woven and knitted materials.
Principle: The sample mounted on the polyurethane tube is arbitrarily turned over in the wooden box lined with cork with constant speed. After a specified number of flips, the performance of pilling and/or pilling is visually described and evaluated.
4 Random Tumble Pilling Test:It is used to determine the pilling and fuzzing characteristics of textile fabrics. Stainless steel impellers rotate within individually lit aluminum chambers constantly tumbling test fabrics against cork liners for a predetermined time controlled by a timer and audible alarm. Compressed air is also injected into the chamber to assist in the tumbling action. Laboratory standard compressed air supply required.
Principle: Under the specified conditions, the fabric is randomly rolled in the cylindrical test chamber lined with material. After the specified test time, the fabric's fuilling, pilling and felting properties are visually described and evaluated.

Martindale tester: It mainly meet with ASTM D4966, 4970 , ISO 12945.2, 12947.1, ISO 5470.2, DIN 53863 IWS TM 196, Mï¹ S P17, Next TM26,SN 198525, GB/T 4802.2. standard ;of course GB/T 33734-2017 "Woven infant bedding", GB/T 22796-2009 "quilt and quilt cover", GB/T 22843-2009 "pillow and cushion products" and other bedding products use this method to evaluate the pilling performance.
Surface Fuzzing And Pilling Tester : It mainly meet with DIN 53863.2 and GB/T 4802.1 standard .of course meet with FZ/T 73018-2012 "Wool knitwear", FZ/T 73005-2012 "Low wool Blend and wool-like knitwear", FZ/T 73015-2009 "Linen knitwear" and other wool-containing, wool-like and linen knitwear were evaluated by this method for pilling performance.
ICI Pilling Box Tester.: It mainly meet with EN ISO 12945-1 and DIN 53863.2 . of course it meet with FZ/T 73018-2012 "Wool knitwear", FZ/T 73005-2012 "Low wool Blend and wool-like knitwear", FZ/T 73015-2009 "Linen knitwear" and other wool-containing, wool-like and linen knitwear were evaluated by this method for pilling performance
Random Tumble Pilling Tester : This test method is applicable to most woven and knitted fabrics, including pile fabrics.It meet with standard ASTM D3512 , ISO 12945-3, DIN 53867, JIS L1076-D, GB/T 4802.
